digital policies

(rough notes below, needs more)

I am against the creation of digital policies in the work place. While many places of work may feel the need to clarify what type of digital activity they are okay with and where their boundaries are, there are ways to be effective with that communication that don't include creation of a digital policy. Digital policies for the most part don't allow for flexibility or interpretation with time as the technologies and tolerance for digital behavior grows. DPs also discourage transparency in the work place.

Example of a digital policy's negative effects on a work place:

Perot Systems bans the use of all social networks and instant messaging clients. Specifically in regards to IM, this is a technology where the technology itself has not changed much over time, but the understanding, acceptance and implementation of different ways to use it have. IM may have at first been viewed as a way to chit-chat with friends, but now is widely used to increase productivity between coworkers as well as provide an efficient time-saving solution to email (see EmailReduction).
